Urban Forest School by Naomi Walmsley and Dan Westall

Do you need some fun activities to do with your kids during Thanksgiving break?

Urban Forest School has a ton of outdoor adventures and skills for city kids.

"Being outdoors & immersed in nature isn't just for people that live in the countryside. Get all the practical ideas you need to bring nature & outdoor play to town & city dwellers of all ages."

About:
In the view from your window more concrete than countryside and are you more familiar with graffiti than green grass? Just because you live in a town or city, it doesn't mean that learning about wildlife, nature and the great outdoors isn't for you. This activity-packed book helps you to make the most of your local patch and discover the hidden things you don't see when travelling around by car. Urban gardens, allotments, parks, cemeteries, playgrounds and more, provide green havens and opportunities for some magical forest-school fun. Whether it be collecting sticks in playgrounds or foraging for nettles in a nearby park, there is so much to explore and learn about.

Venture out to your local greenspace or just into your back garden if you have one, and have a go at the amazing array of outdoor activities described - from building a hidden sheet den to creating watering stations for bees and making biodegradable bird-feeders. While you are there, scavenge and forage for raw materials and then extend the fun with creative makes and recipes to do back at home such as leaf printing, leaf bunting, stick boats and stinging nettle crisps (if you dare!). Get to know the wild parts of your city or town with handy bug, plant and tree ID sections, plus a scavenger hunt and cloud-spotting game that can be done when out and about. Games to play with organized groups or with your family and friends add another dimension to this book that is bursting with ideas for urban outdoor adventures.

Celebrate the incredible benefits that come with spending time outdoors and interacting with nature by reading the evocative real-life stories dotted through the book. A selection of town and city dwellers of all ages describe their personal memoires of interactions with urban nature and what they have meant to them.

In my opinion:

Urban Forest School book was full of fun home crafts, recipes and activities to do in the park, garden and around the city.

Olivia loves projects and art so this was the perfect book for us. Olivia and I decided to do the Botanical interactive art project. Since Thanksgiving is coming up we created a turkey. It was pretty hot so we had to work fast. It was a great bonding experience and I appreciated all of the fun projects and crafts found in this outdoor adventure book.

Our next project will be the Pine-cone deer. We've been gathering pine cones so we can create a cute deer for Christmas.

I definitely recommend this adorable book. It is so therapeutic to get outside and enjoy nature and the beautiful earth we live in. This book is perfect for those looking for fun and creative ways to use raw materials found outside whether it be a sheet den or a biodegradable bird feeder.
